About This Event

The Esk Estuary Escapade [Ravenglass] - National Park Guided Walk will take place on September 2nd, 2026, at the Ravenglass Village Car Park in Barrow In Furness. It is a free, 4-hour volunteer-led guided walk around the area.

A 4 hour volunteer-led guided walk around the only Lake District coastal village and surrounding area including a Roman Bath House.

Start point: Ravenglass village car park

Length: 8.7km (5.5miles) with 177m (580ft) of ascent

Time: 4 hours (approx.)

Walk grade: 3 (see grade description below)

An easy grade walk which follows the coast south from Ravenglass with views over the Eskmeals Dunes Nature Reserve before turning east and following the River Esk estuary towards Muncaster Castle. The route returns to Ravenglass over Newtown Knott with, weather permitting, views north over Eskdale and finishing with a visit to the remains of a Roman Bath House.

Paths are generally good but there are some sections that are stony and others that will be slippery and/or muddy in poor weather.

The start time of the walk has been deliberately chosen to allow participants the option to travel to Ravenglass by rail. The most convenient train travelling north leaves Barrow-in-Furness at 09:32 and arrives at Ravenglass at 10:19. Unfortunately there is no longer a suitable train service from Carlisle for this date. There is a train which leaves Carlisle at 07:06 and arrives in Ravenglass at 09:07.

Grade 3 walks may include some moderate ascents and descents. The path surface might be earth, grass or stone and – while generally firm – it will have some loose or uneven sections, or be soft underfoot after rain. You will also encounter steps, gates or stiles and narrow sections. Most of our grade 3 walks are suitable for families.

Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather and bring a packed lunch.

Public transport: There is a train service between Carnforth and Carlisle via Barrow-in-Furness which stops at Ravenglass. There is no suitable bus service to Ravenglass.

Your confirmation email will include full details - please read it carefully.
