A 5.5 hour volunteer-led guided walk to Loughrigg Fell with views over Grasmere, Rydal Water and Elterwater. With steep ascents and descents

Start point: Britannia Inn, Elterwater

Length: 11.7km (7.3 miles) with 612m (2007ft) of ascent

This is a challenging and rewarding walk beginning from Elterwater, following Great Langdale Beck before climbing steeply for 150m to a splendid view from Megs Gill waterfalls. From here the walk continues over Dow Bank before a second steep ascent of 200m to the summit of Loughrigg itself (335m). Coming off the fell the route passes Loughrigg Tarn and then returns to Elterwater along the Cumbria Way.

Paths are generally good but there are some sections that may be muddy and/or slippery in poor weather. There are a number of sections of steep ascent and rocky descent and other features such as stiles on the route.

Grade 5 walks are our most challenging full day walks which involve going onto the fell summits. These walks require a good level of fitness and full walking kit appropriate for the weather conditions. Some people may find walking poles useful. You may encounter sustained climbs up some steeper sections. The surfaces can be rough and uneven, with rocky or muddy sections, irregular steps, stiles or narrow gates and gaps.
