On 12 September 2026, a workshop session will take place at The Higgins Bedford in Milton Keynes from 10:30 am to 1 pm. Participants including residents of Carriacou and their families will map homes, journeys, and memories connecting the island to Britain. This event is listed as a trade opportunity with a zero-cost registration fee for vendors rather than open public admission. Various performers are scheduled to support the session focused on preserving these specific community connections.
SESSION ONE · 10:30am–1pm — Carriacou people (Kayaks) and families: map the homes, journeys and memories connecting Carriacou and Britain.
Where Was Home & Where Is Home Now?
A free Town Island mapping and storytelling workshop for Carriacou people, families and the wider community.
Carriacou people: come put your family on the map!
Where did your family live in Carriacou? Where did they settle in Britain? What houses, streets, schools and neighbourhoods shaped their lives?
This free, intergenerational workshop is created first and foremost for Carriacou people (Kayaks) and their families. If you have Carriacou roots, we especially want you in the room.
The wider community is also welcome. All ages are encouraged to take part.
The workshop will be led by Benaiah Matheson, a Huddersfield-born British-Kayak artist of Carriacou-Grenadian heritage and Director of Diaspora Engagement and Cultural Partnerships at the Carriacou Historical Society and Museum.
His long-term Town Island practice explores the cultural, familial and diasporic connections between Huddersfield and Carriacou through mapping, oral history and collective making.
What will we do?
We will explore borders, plantations, countries, migration, cities and towns connected to Carriacou, Grenada and Britain.
You will be invited to respond to the question:
Where was home and where is home now? Share, show, record.
Using a large collection of historical Ordnance Survey maps of Bedford, Birmingham, Huddersfield and London—as well as maps of Carriacou—you can:
Locate family houses and villages
Identify streets, schools and neighbourhoods
Trace journeys between Carriacou and Britain
Write down memories, names and family sayings
Share stories about migration, home and belonging
Layer maps, writing and coloured papers
You can share as much or as little as you wish. Your writing and memories can be shared, recorded or kept private.
Bring your family photographs
You may bring up to 25 physical family photographs to be professionally scanned during the workshop.
Your original photographs will be returned to you on the day. Digital copies will also be emailed to you.
With your permission, copies can be donated to the Carriacou Museum’s digital archive, helping to preserve the names, faces and histories of Carriacou families for future generations.
Please bring any information you know about the photographs, including names, places and approximate dates.
You do not need to bring photographs to take part.
