The next installment of the Germany in Text and Context reading series features German journalist and author Manuel Biallas.
Manuel Biallas will read from a selection of his articles in English, followed by a conversation about social inequality, poverty, and the myth of social mobility and what it means to "make it" in the worlds of journalism and literature.
What does it really take to move up in society? Who gets to tell stories about poverty and inequality. How to write about poverty? And who gets listened to? And how do elitism and privilege shape the worlds of journalism and literature?
The event will also feature an exclusive surprise for the audience — stay tuned for more!
No prior knowledge of German, German literature, or German cultures is needed!
Free & open to anyone.
Refreshments will be provided.

Manuel Biallas is a journalist, filmmaker and author based in Germany. His documentaries and reports are regularly broadcast on NDR, ARD and Phoenix, all part of Germany’s public-service broadcasting system.
His essays and features have appeared in Deutschlandfunk, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Zeit, Der Spiegel and der Freitag. He also works with universities and theatres, speaks regularly on stage, and moderates readings and public events.
His work has received the Otto Brenner Prize and the CIVIS Media Prize, and he has been nominated for the Grimme Online Award.
