This workshop explores why men and boys are less likely to seek support following sexual violence or domestic abuse. Del Beach-Campbell, who leads the groupwork programme at SurvivorsUK, will examine surrounding myths, stigma, and barriers to disclosure. The session will cover the impact of trauma on intimacy, mental health, and relationships with perpetrators.
This workshop was inspired by my working with male survivors over the last five years as lead facilitator of the groupwork Programme at SurvivorsUK. In that time I have gained a unique insight into the issues men and boys may present with upon disclosure and an understanding of the impact it might have on our lives. This workshop will explore why men and boys are less likely to come forward when seeking support around the trauma of sexual violence or domestic abuse. We will examine the many myths surrounding the subject, and take a close look at stigma, barriers to coming forward, trust, toxic masculinity, the impact of sexual violence on sex and intimacy, triggers, trauma symptoms, guilt, shame, mental health, isolation, disclosure, and relationship with perpetrator.
