Sarah Hunt will lead an online session on 13 October 2026 at 13:00 on using breathwork to address dysregulation in therapy. The presentation explains how breathwork directly communicates with the nervous system to guide the body back to calm and support self-reflection.
As the master-regulator of the body, our Nervous System is the key to our sense of well-being. When the Nervous System is triggered by a traumatic event or when the body is dealing with long-term stress and adrenal fatigue, it can be difficult to get into the body out of this sympathetic nervous response and back to feeling calm and at ease. Not only do we feel terrible both physically and emotionally…certain things happen in the brain under conditions of stress which make it very difficult to self-reflect, see things from a new perspective or imagine alternative possibilities for our future.
The magic of the breath is that it has a direct line of communication with the Nervous System. Because it is a semi-autonomous process, we can use the breath as both an honest measure of our stress levels in the moment, and as a way to regulate the nervous system and guide the body back to a felt-sense of well-being and safety anytime we have been triggered. When combined with therapeutic practice, breathwork can be a powerful support, helping clients return to a regulated state and regain the capacity to self-reflect, open up to new possibilities and image creative solutions to problems…all the things so essential for their therapeutic journey.
This workshop will teach participants how to use breathing techniques to gently guide the body away from sympathetic nervous system response and back to parasympathetic nervous system regulation. It will explain how breathing practices can change the biochemical, neurological and physiological realities in the body, why it is so difficult to self-reflect when our Nervous System is disregulated, and it will give guidance on how to teach/share these breathing practices which regulate the Nervous System with clients.
