Down the Garden Path - The origins of Safavid Chahar Bagh Carpets and their influence on weaving to the present day . A talk by A. Haughton
Andrew Haughton has bought, sold and more importantly loved oriental carpets for much of his life, but nothing caught his interest as much as how 16th century Persian gardens (or Chahar Bagh meaning ‘four gardens’) found their way into so called Garden Carpets.
In arid geographies where much carpet weaving originated, technologies for diverting and saving water evolved which are directly related to our subject. We’ll see how Achaemenid, Christian and Islamic influences contributed to the imagery of those early carpets, which in turn have influenced Iranian, Indian, Afghani and other weavers to the present day.
Andrew Haughton is an independent scholar, and proprietor of Nomads Tent of Edinburgh.
