In 1937, the Nazis staged the 'Degenerate Art' exhibition to demonstrate all that had gone wrong with Germany. Instead, it unintentionally created one of Modern European art's greatest retrospectives. Art historian John-Paul Stonard explores this extraordinary story, uncovering the groundbreaking works of Dada, German Expressionism and the Bauhaus that drew more than a million visitors despite being denounced as dangerous and subversive. Examining the politics, propaganda and artistic innovation behind one of the most fascinating exhibitions in art history, John-Paul explores the story behind the show and its artworks, many of which were later destroyed or lost in the chaos of war.
